Cincinnati Reds outfielder/first baseman Michael Toglia will undergo season-ending surgery on Tuesday, four days after injuring his right shoulder while making a diving catch.
An MRI on Monday led to a diagnosis of a torn labrum. Reds team doctor Tim Kremchek will perform the operation.
The Monday update was a surprise to Toglia, according to Reds manager Terry Francona.
“That kid, he swore he was going to play (soon),” Francona said. “When I saw him in the trainer’s room the next day, he was trying to do stuff. That’s pretty amazing to me.”
The Reds placed Toglia on the 10-day injured list on Sunday and promoted utility man Ivan Johnson from Triple-A Louisville.
Toglia spent most of the season with Louisville, hitting .273 with 22 homers and 65 RBIs in 97 games before he was called up to the major league club on Aug. 11. In 10 games for the Reds, he hit .115 (3-for-26) with no homers and one RBI.
Over the previous four seasons, Toglia played for the Colorado Rockies, and he hit 25 home runs while appearing in 116 games in 2024. In 290 major league games overall, he has a .198 batting average with a .275 on-base percentage, a .384 slugging percentage, 42 homers and 109 RBIs.
