Dale Brown, who guided LSU men’s basketball to two Final Fours in the 1980s and transformed the program into a national power during his 25-year coaching tenure in Baton Rouge, died Friday, the university announced. He was 90.
Brown guided the Tigers to the national semifinals in 1981 and 1986. They lost to the eventual national champion both times: to Indiana in ‘81 and Louisville in ‘86. The Tigers made 13 NCAA Tournaments in all during Brown’s time in charge.
LSU’s most famous alums under Brown are Shaquille O’Neal and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf (formerly Chris Jackson), who added their names to program lore alongside Pete Maravich. But the program’s greatest team successes, the Final Fours, came with future NBA players such as Rudy Macklin, Howard Carter, John “Hot Plate” Williams and Nikita Wilson leading the way.
Brown came to Baton Rouge from Washington State in 1972. It was his first and, as it turned out, only head coaching job in the North Dakota native’s career. He compiled a 448-301 record (.598 winning percentage) overall, and his teams went 238-200 in Southeastern Conference play. The Tigers won four SEC regular-season championships (1979, 1981, 1985, 1991) and one SEC Tournament title (1980) under Brown.
Brown’s coaching ability, gift of gab and charisma made him a national figure, but the latter two also made him an enemy of the NCAA in the 1980s and ‘90s. Brown spoke out strongly against the association, branding its officials as hypocrites and, famously, the Gestapo, for its heavy-handedness regarding benefits to players. The NCAA took away two scholarships from the program in 1986 after it found LSU guilty of 16 violations.
Brown met his coaching end a decade later after another run-in with the NCAA. At the time, the association was investigating the program over a $5,000 payment made by an LSU booster to former player Lester Earl. The NCAA found no evidence that Brown was directly involved in the payment, but the program was placed on probation in 1998 nonetheless. Brown retired in 1997.
Those incidents did not tarnish Brown’s legacy entirely. He was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 1999, the LSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013 and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014. This week, he was announced as the 2027 recipient of the John R. Wooden Legends of Coach Award.
