Evan Bouchard and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins each had a goal and an assist, Leon Draisaitl also scored and Kasperi Kapanen had two assists for the Oilers, whose three-game winning streak ended. Edmonton fell to 7-0-1 on the road.
Oilers goalie Tristan Jarry made 31 saves after pitching shutouts in his previous two starts. Connor McDavid tallied the secondary assist on Draisaitl’s third-period goal, extending his assist streak to 16 games, the longest run ever at the start of an NHL season.
Draisaitl tied the game 3-3 one minute into the third period. The Oilers were finishing a 5-on-3 power play left over from the previous period when Kapanen set Draisaitl up for a snap shot.
McDavid and New Jersey’s Jesper Bratt found the back of the net early in the shootout, and Arseny Gritsyuk beat Jarry in the fourth round for the decisive tally. Hellebuyck turned away Kapanen’s attempt to end the game.
Bouchard put Edmonton ahead 1-0 at 8:29 of the first period. Mattias Ekholm set up the goal with a cross-ice pass, and Bouchard’s slap shot beat Hellebuyck top shelf.

Hughes put the Devils in front 2-1 at 14:50 of the middle frame when Dougie Hamilton set him up for a one-timer. He scored again 45 seconds later on a power play, tipping in Brown’s cross-ice shot to extend the lead to 3-1.
Nugent-Hopkins cut the deficit to 3-2 at 18:16 of the second with a wrist shot through traffic on a power play.
The Devils outshot the Oilers 15-3 in the second frame.
