David Castillo’s late layup rescues K-State in win over Tulsa

David Castillo scored the go-ahead layup with 13.6 seconds to play as Kansas State rallied late for an 84-83 nonconference win over Tulsa on Monday in Manhattan, Kan.P.J. Haggerty produced a game-high 29 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats (4-0). Khamari McGriff scored 13 points and pulled down nine boards, Castillo chipped in 12 points and Abdi Bashir Jr. added 10 points.Miles Barnstable led the Golden Hurricane (3-1) with 18 points and nine rebounds. Myles Rigsby and Tylen Riley each added 12 points, and David Green scored 11 points.Barnstable hit a 3-pointer with 2:04 to play that put Tulsa up 79-76. McGriff followed with two free throws, and Kansas State trailed by one.Ian Smikle’s layup put the Golden Hurricane up 81-78 with 1:15 to go. Rigby hit a pair of free throws and Tulsa led by five with 49 seconds to play. Three seconds later, Haggerty converted two foul shots, cutting Kansas State’s deficit to 83-80.Haggerty’s leaner cut the Tulsa lead to 83-82 with 31 seconds left. A steal by McGriff set up Castillo’s layup as Kansas State closed the game on a 6-0 run. Green missed a short jumper for Tulsa as time expired.
